What is cholas and cholos?

Cholas and cholos are two very different terms, with distinct cultural connotations.

Cholas are a subculture of Mexican-American or Latino women who have a distinct style of dress, blending elements of traditional Mexican clothing with punk and goth fashion. They wear dark lipstick and dramatic eye makeup, and often sport voluminous hairdos. The chola style originated in the 1970s and has roots in Los Angeles gang culture.

Cholos, on the other hand, are a subculture of Mexican-American or Latino men who are associated with gang activity, particularly in California. They have a distinctive style of dress that typically includes baggy pants, white t-shirts, bandanas, and tattoos. The cholo style has been around since the 1940s, and originated in the zoot suit subculture.

While cholas and cholos share some commonalities in terms of their ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they represent different cultural movements with distinct characteristics. It's important to understand and respect these cultural differences rather than conflate them or use them interchangeably.
